Rising like a surreal dream from the desert sands, the Al Jahili Fort provides modern visitors to Abu Dhabi a glimpse of life in the Emirate before oil wealth transformed it.  The fortress was constructed in 1891 in the desert oasis town of Al Ain.  Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa the First was the ruler of Abu Dhabi as the head of the Bani Yas Tribe and head of the Al Falah family.  He and his court needed a summer reguge from the extreme heat and humidity of the city of Abu Dhabi and found refuge in Al Ain.  The fortress was later abandoned in about 1940, but was resurected with newly achieved oil wealth in 1985.
