The anchor structure of a spectacular mixed-use development in downtown Dubai, UAE, the Burj Khalifa was constructed between 2004 and 2009 at a cost of approximately $2 billion.  Designed by a team led by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owens & Merrill of Chicago, Illinois, the Burj is currently the tallest building and structure in the world.  An interesting fact:  the building was originally named the Burj Dubai, but the name was changed when the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa, agreed to bail out the government of Dubai during the oil industry bust that occurred during the tower's construction.
